| Comments

In case you come across XZ compressed data in form of tar ball *.tar.xz here is how you can decompress your data using tar command under Linux. First install xz-utils package. It is very likely that this package is already installed on your system. To check whether xz-utils package is installed on your system run:

$ dpkg -l | grep xz-utils

if no output is present then you do not have xz-utils installed. If so, install xz-utils with:

# apt-get install xz-utils

At this point you are ready to extract your XZ compressed data with command:

$ tar xvJf my-XZ-compressed-data.tar.xz
